Why
is it so difficult to stop smoking?
When
you smoke cigarettes, nicotine reaches your brain in just seconds
after you inhale the smoke. Your brain and body begin to get accustomed
to functioning with a certain level of nicotine. Because the level
of nicotine in your body drops dramatically after your last cigarette,
you begin to experience withdrawal symptoms and the urge to smoke
another cigarette.
Some common nicotine withdrawal symptoms can include nicotine cravings,
irritability, anxiety, depression, restlessness, difficulty concentrating,
difficulty sleeping at night and an increased appetite (possibly
leading to weight gain). These withdrawal symptoms will usually
begin to peak within 24 to 72 hours after your last cigarette, then
decline over the next few weeks. Some smokers may even experience
nicotine withdrawal symptoms for several months after they quit.
How
does the nicotine patch work?
The patch can help you to quit smoking by reducing your nicotine
withdrawal symptoms. When you are wearing the patch, nicotine is
absorbed through your skin and slowly released into your bloodstream.
This helps reduce the withdrawal symptoms that people normally experience
when they attempt to quit smoking because it gradually administers
lower amounts of the nicotine that your body has become accustomed
to from smoking.
The Habitrol patch program offers three patches with various dosing
levels. You can change to a lower dose patch by switching the patch
that you wear to gradually reduce your nicotine intake over an eight-week
period. This program will help to reduce any nicotine withdrawal
symptoms such as irritability, anxiety, restlessness, headaches,
difficulty sleeping and concentrating, increased appetite, and nicotine
cravings. By reducing these physical withdrawal symptoms, the patch
can help you to concentrate on the psychological aspects of quitting
and to allow you to change your habits that trigger your nicotine
cravings (e.g. drinking alcohol, or any other activities that you
associate with smoking).
Why wearing a Habitrol patch is better for you than smoking
cigarettes
When you place a nicotine patch on your skin, you aren’t inhaling
the harmful tars, toxins and other chemicals that are found in cigarettes.
These carcinogenic
substances are the most dangerous parts of cigarette
smoke.
Another bonus is that there is no second-hand smoke that can affect
your family and friends because you are not smoking when wearing
the Habitrol patch.
The
benefits of quitting
Most people now understand the negative health effects
and increased risks associated with smoke cigarettes, such as cancer,
heart disease and emphysema, but many people are not aware of the
immediate and long-term advantages of quitting.
Some immediate benefits in the first days and months may include
the following:
- Breathing might get easier
- Food starts to taste better
- The sense of smell can improve
- Walking, exercise and sport may become easier
It is never too late to quit smoking. Even if you are 74 your body
can begin to cleanse and start working to repair the damage caused
by years of smoking.

How
can I be smoke free in 8 weeks?
The Habitrol patch program takes 8 weeks to complete. At
the end of this program, you should stop using Habitrol patches.
It is important
that you continue to use the patch until you have completed the
entire NRT (nicotine repacement therapy) program, and continue to
use the support program whenever you need it.
Make sure that
you are fully committed and prepared to do what it takes to give
up smoking. Anyone under 18 years of age should consult with their
doctor before using Habitrol patches or similar NRT products.
If you
smoke more than 10 cigarettes each day:
Begin with Habitrol patch Step 1. Use this 21mg patch for 4
weeks, then switch to the 14mg Habitrol patch for 2 weeks, before
finishing on the 7mg Habitrol patch for the remaining 2 weeks.
If you
smoke 10 or less cigarettes each day:
Begin with Habitrol patch Step 2, using this 14mg patch for
6 weeks, then switch to the 7mg Habitrol patch for the remaining
2 weeks.
Important note: Studies have shown that completing the full NRT
program will substantially increase your chances of successfully
quitting smoking. You should stop using Habitrol patches at the
end of the 8 week program.
The Habitrol
system of lowering your patch dosage over 8 weeks will aid you in
overcoming your physical cravings for nicotine. If you decide you
need to continue nicotine replacement therapy after you have completed
the full 8 weeks of the Habitrol patch course, you should consult
your doctor or health professional.
Studies have
shown that using Habitrol patches can double your chance of successfully
quitting smoking compared to going cold turkey (no more nicotine).

Some
friendly advice to help you with your quit smoking program:
- Write
up a list of your reasons for quitting smoking and stick them on
your mirror. Go over them daily.
- Tell your close friends and/or family members of your stop smoking
goal and ask them for any specific help that you believe you will
need from each of them.
- Know the "triggers" that cause you to reach for a cigarette
and practice strategies for coping with these.
- Change your current daily routines (e.g. Don't sit in your normal
"smoking chair", do some exercise in your breaks.)
- Make plans on how you will spend all the money that you'll save
from not smoking cigarettes.
